Davidoff Escurio

Two years after the introduction of Davidoff with Nicaraguan tobaccos in 2013, the Davidoff Escurio cigars with Brazilian tobaccos were launched in the summer of 2015. Like the Davidoff Nicaragua, this series is produced at the Oettinger Davidoff Group’s Tabacalera in the Dominican Republic. For better discoverability, we have categorized the cigars under “Brazil.” Together with the Nicaragua and the Davidoff Yamasa, they form the so-called “Discovery” portfolio of the renowned Swiss company.

Davidoff Escurio: A New Era of Brazilian Tobaccos in the Luxury Class

An Ecuadorian Sun Grown is used as the wrapper, while the binder is a so-called “Cubra” from Brazil. This Cubra is also a Sun Grown, which, due to its cultivation in Brazil, develops a distinctive and, according to the manufacturer, more refined note. The filler also includes a Brazilian Cubra and a Mata Fina, blended with Dominican Olor and San Vincente. The series initially consisted of only three formats: the largest vitola is the Gran Toro, complemented by a classic Robusto and a Petit Robusto. The latter is also available packaged in tubes. Numerous additional vitolas have since been added.

Characteristics and Reviews by Cigar Magazines

The renowned Austrian cigar magazine Cigar Journal awarded one format from this series an impressive 93 points in a blind tasting even before its official release. The flavor was described as sweet and spicy, and the complexity of these products as an “explosion of different notes.” Davidoff itself speaks of chili, pepper, and softer, creamier notes that evolve throughout the smoke, combining with wood, licorice, fruits, salt, and leather.

Interestingly, there is also a dedicated accessory line, consisting of two cigar cases, a cigar punch, and a jet flame lighter. The highlight of this Escurio accessory line is its color combination, inspired by the Brazilian flag, blending classic black with touches of yellow and green.

From Introduction to Cult Status: The Evolution of the Davidoff Escurio Series

We received the initial shipment of Davidoff on September 28, 2015, and were very curious to see how this further expansion of the portfolio following Nicaragua in 2013 would perform on the market. It can now be said that these cigars are polarizing—you either love them or hate them. The flavor profile is truly “unique,” yet it has clearly found its fans. The next release is expected to feature Cuban tobacco, as far as we are informed … ;-) Personally, I was particularly taken by the small Petit Robusto: although relatively expensive, it can be very convincing as a short, special smoke for in between.

In August 2016, the vitolas Corona Gorda and Gran Perfecto were added. Since then, the Primeros and the Davidoff Escurio Zigarillos have also been introduced. Later additions included another Primeros, a 6x60, and a limited Gran Torpedo.
