The history of Gurkha cigars truly began when the founder of the brand, Kaizad Hansotia, purchased a few cigars bearing the Gurkha name while vacationing on the Indian island of Goa in 1988. The Portuguese owners eventually sold him their entire remaining stock of cigars as well as the trademark rights for just $143. Overnight, Kaizad had acquired their struggling business, although his original intention was simply to give the cigars away as gifts to business associates. They quickly developed a taste for them, inspiring him to turn the brand into a successful business.

In the early 1990s, most cigars were neither particularly original nor premium in their presentation, and cigar prices generally remained at a "normal" level. Gurkha cigars took a different path, introducing a wide range of highly distinctive and exceptionally expensive cigars that established the brand's glamorous and exclusive image, which continues to define it today.

Gurkha Ghost Silver: The Impressive Story Behind the Cigar

The wrapper of the original Gurkha Ghost, now sold as Gurkha Ghost Silver, is a Brazil Arapiraca. The binder is a Criollo 98 from the Dominican Republic, while the filler tobaccos come exclusively from Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic. These cigars are produced by Abe Flores (PDR, Flores & Rodriguez, La Palina, and several Kristoff cigars). They are quite similar to PDR cigars and produce an abundant amount of white smoke, so don't be surprised when you light one up. Chocolate, wood, pepper, and a subtle sweetness define the flavor profile, offering a medium-bodied smoking experience that we personally enjoy very much.
