PDR Capa Sun Grown

The cigar factory PDR, founded by Abraham "Abe" Flores, has seen incredible growth in recent years. He was originally born in Queens, New York, to Dominican parents and then immigrated "back" to his quasi-homeland at the age of 3. He grew up on his grandfather's farm in the Dominican Republic, which also cultivated tobacco. However, at that time, he had no interest in it and was glad when he moved back to the USA with his parents at the age of 14.

After earning a degree in Marketing in 1999, he initially ventured into the software industry. As often happens, chance played a role in his life. His cousin worked in a restaurant and occasionally sold cigars to guests that he brought from the Dominican Republic, which sparked Abe's interest. Initially, he only helped his cousin sell cigars. During another period of unemployment in 2002, he reconnected with his roots and applied to work at La Aurora in his home country. While that didn't materialize, he found a job with an online cigar retailer in the USA. There, he initially set up a webshop and established crucial contacts. Eventually, in 2004, he built his first tobacco factory in the Dominican Republic, which he named PDR (the abbreviation stands for the Cuban Pinar del Rio).

Since then, he has gained a great deal of attention and produces cigars for brands like La Palina and Gurkha, among others. Additionally, he also produces new series for Kristoff Galerones, such as the DR4 and the Ceniza de Plata. The PDR 1878 Capa Sun Grown described here is the third line alongside the PDR 1878 Capa Madura C. Especial and the PDR 1878 Capa Oscura Reserva Dominicana to make it to Germany. Originally, these cigars were named Capa Habano and were renamed to Capa Sun Grown for the European market due to trademark rights. The year 1878 was chosen by Abe because it represents the founding year of the Cuban city of Pinar del Rio. Interestingly, he has no direct connection to Cuba; it is merely a homage to the birthplace of the Habano and the center of Cuban tobacco cultivation.

These cigars are rolled in the Cuban Entubado style and consist entirely of Dominican tobaccos. This means that all the filler tobaccos, binder, and wrapper come from there. The wrapper and binder are Sun Grown, and he used a Criollo 98 and a Corojo in the filler. Abraham Flores also decided to finish the cigar heads with a so-called pigtail.

The blend is medium-bodied, with a flavor profile characterized by a subtle peppery note and some cedarwood. Overall, there is a mild sweetness in the background, reminiscent of caramel. Currently, we offer two vitolas, packaged in high-quality blue wooden boxes of 20.
