Villiger 1492 Discovery Edition

The 1492 Discovery Edition by Villiger Cigars was first introduced at Intertabac 2023. It is an extension of the classic 1492 Cigars, which were sold under the name Hommage 1492 from 2001 to 2014. The year 1492 serves as a reminder of the discovery of the New World. Christopher Columbus not only discovered the New World but also brought tobacco plants back across the Atlantic to Europe after his first voyage. This was certainly a pivotal moment in the history of tobacco enjoyment, which, more than 500 years later, is being celebrated once again with these vitolas. The box is therefore adorned with the three ships with which he dared to cross the Atlantic: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the "little" Niña.
Villiger Cigars 1492 Discovery Edition
The classic 1492 cigars are manufactured at ABAM Cigars, the tabacalera of Matias Maragoto. The Discovery Edition cigars, however, come from Tabacalera Palma, owned by Jochy Blanco, with whom Villiger, as far as we know, collaborated for the first time on this project. Jochy is also the producer of the increasingly popular La Galera Cigars, which have been competing for aficionados' favor with numerous series since the mid-2010s. A brief look into the distant past: Villiger Söhne AG, founded in 1888 by Jean Villiger in Switzerland, has established itself over the decades as one of the leading brands in the world of cigars. What once began as a small manufactory quickly grew into an internationally recognized company with an excellent reputation for high-quality premium cigars. While Villiger was initially known for its machine-made cigars, in recent decades, the company has also made a name for itself in the world of hand-rolled long-filler cigars.
Cigars for the 500th Anniversary: Villiger 1492 Discovery Edition
The Villiger 1492 Discovery Edition combines tradition with modern demands for quality and taste. It is currently available in two formats: Gran Toro and Robusto. Both formats feature a harmonious blend of Dominican tobaccos wrapped in a fine wrapper from Ecuador. In our tasting, the Villiger 1492 Discovery Edition revealed itself as a mild to medium-bodied cigar with pronounced creaminess. Nutty notes, cedarwood, and a natural sweetness defined the aroma. Toward the end, the flavor became drier, earthier, and more leathery, with roasted notes of coffee and chocolate. There was hardly any spiciness, making the cigar harmonious and straightforward.
