Cain Cigars – Bold Smoking Pleasure with Plenty of Ligero
Straight Ligero—most people rightly associate this with bold cigars of Nicaraguan origin. For several years, thanks to the importer Wolfertz GmbH, these strong cigars have also enjoyed great popularity here in Germany. But where did this manufacturer, with the goal of using only select tobaccos to create especially full-flavored and strong blends, suddenly come from?
Cain, like NUB, is a brand under the project label Studio Tobac, which has been part of the Oliva Company since 2007. Studio Tobac is, in fact, a collective of select Oliva Company staff members, called “The Board,” responsible for exclusive smoking experiences. The blends of Cain cigars are created by Gilberto Jr., who aims to craft flavorful cigars with a high Ligero content and exceptional quality.
The Tobaccos Behind Cain Ligero
While NUB caused a stir upon release with its large 60 ring gauge, Cain made headlines with its high nicotine content and strong blend. Strong cigars, more suitable for experienced aficionados, were available even before Cain’s launch in 2009.
What makes Cain cigars unique is the consistent use of three different Ligero tobaccos from Nicaragua. The moniker “Straight Ligero” underscores the focus on Ligero tobaccos in all blends. Despite the high percentage of strong tobaccos, these cigars are highly smokable, though they require higher humidity in the humidor for optimal flavor.
The Ligero tobaccos from the regions of Esteli, Condega, and Jalapa are crafted into the Serie F, Maduro, and Sun Grown (known as Cain Habano in the USA), as well as Daytona series in the Tabacalera Oliva. Ligero tobacco comes from the uppermost parts of the tobacco plant, absorbing abundant sunlight and nutrients. Esteli tobaccos are the strongest, Condega tobaccos deliver strength with complex aromas, and Jalapa tobaccos are softer and finer in character.
What Makes Cain Cigars Special
All Cain series consist of over 80% Ligero tobaccos and, due to their bold nature, are better suited for experienced aficionados. The Daytona, as the latest release, offers a milder and lighter profile compared to its predecessors Sun Grown, Maduro, and Serie F, despite its high Ligero content. The Cain Sun Grown was awarded 91 points by Cigar Snob, the Daytona received 92 points from Cigar Journal, and the Serie F earned 92 points from Cigar Aficionado. The Cain NUB line combines the best characteristics of both brands. Alternatively, aficionados may enjoy Nicarao, or, for Cuban enthusiasts, brands like H. Upmann, Ramon Allones, Cuaba, or Vegas Robaina.
