1. Introduction: Among the venerable English mixtures of old, Dunhill’s London Mixture long stood as an unshakable lodestar - an authoritative point of reference by which successive generations of pipe-smokers quietly measured their expectations. When Dunhill withdrew from the world of tobacco in the year 2018, that guiding standard seemed, for a time, to have slipped into history. It was in this void that GLP Westminster emerged, fashioned by the self-taught American artisan Gregory L. Pease and prepared by Cornell & Diehl. Conceived as a kind of re-embodiment of the original, pre-1980 Dunhill London Mixture, it draws upon a characteristic stratagem of its creator: a subtly altered Cavendish process, reminiscent of that once practised—under much secrecy—by the late tobacco house of McClelland. 2. Appearance & Cut: The mixture presents itself as a classic ribbon-cut: the deeper browns of the Virginias interwoven with near-black fragments of Latakia, all enlivened by brighter, faintly green-gold Oriental strands. The cut is moderate, neither too long nor too short, and the leaf feels agreeably dry to the touch. One perceives at once that the mixture has been prepared with deliberate care—tidy, balanced, and unmistakably traditional in character. 3. Cold Aroma: In its unlit state, GLP Westminster offers a clarity typical for mixtures of its kind: a refined smoky note, suggestive of well-seasoned timber; a mild, bread-like Virginia fragrance; and the dry, herbal sharpness of the Orient leaf. Particularly striking is the restrained sweetness - far less than one encounters in many American interpretations of the English style. Instead, one is met with earthy depth, faint impressions of tar and leather, and a subtle zest of citrus derived from the Virginias. 4. The Smoke: Beginning: The first puffs reveal an immediately assertive Latakia heart - smoky, dusky, yet without oppressive weight. The Virginias lend a thin, understated sweetness, not unlike a veil of light honey drawn across pale bread. The Orientals appear in a supporting role: dry, delicately piquant, tinged with a modest acidity. Middle: As the bowl progresses, the structure of the blend gathers itself. The smoke becomes rounder; the Virginias step forward with a clearer, brighter presence. The Latakia remains dominant but sheds much of its initial massiveness, settling into a more integrated harmony. The Oriental leaf contributes a near-ethereal herbal accent, imparting a well-tempered equilibrium. Here the characteristic Cavendish influence asserts itself most clearly: the components knit together with softened edges, yielding a composed and measured whole. End: Towards the close, GLP Westminster turns drier and more seasoned, even faintly austere - but in a manner that speaks of character rather than harshness. Earthy tones emerge; a trace of woodsmoke recalls the venerable English mixtures of a former age. The Virginias recede, leaving a deeper, darker spice in their place. 5. Combustion & Technique: Once kindled, GLP Westminster burns with commendable consistency, showing little inclination towards moisture or condensation. One relight will ordinarily suffice. Neither bite nor sharpness intrudes, provided the smoker maintains an unhurried pace. Excessive or forceful draughts, however, can introduce a certain angularity - an entirely traditional trait in mixtures of this lineage. 6. Room Note: The room note is unmistakably English: smoky, woody, dry, touched with a faint, stable-like rusticity. To those unaccustomed to such mixtures it may seem stern, even antiquated; to traditionalists it will feel altogether proper. There is no sweetness, no perfumed ornamentation - only the dignified scent of a gentleman’s club in its earlier, quieter century. 7. Comparison & Classification: Dunhill’s London Mixture has long served as the benchmark for the finely balanced English style: bright, seasoned, with a distinctly present Oriental contour and a comparatively modest Latakia weight. GLP Westminster, by contrast, stands a shade darker: fuller in its Latakia voice, while simultaneously allowing the Virginias greater prominence. Where London Mixture may at times appear lighter, more graceful, almost filigreed, GLP Westminster leans earthward - richer, rounder, and more deeply pitched. The Orientals, more vivid in the Dunhill, retreat somewhat in the Pease interpretation. Thus, GLP Westminster becomes the more sculpted, weightier embodiment of the style, while Dunhill’s London Mixture remains the airy, spiced, and quintessential aristocratic classic. Those who cherished the old Dunhill profile will readily recognise Westminster as an American yet reverent successor - the differences owing, perhaps, in part to the fact that its creator studied aged tins of the long-discontinued pre-1980 original as his chief exemplar. 8. Suitability & Recommendation: GLP Westminster is well suited to smokers who seek an authentically English mixture - unsweetened, unadorned, and free from modern aromatic embellishment. It performs admirably in medium-sized bowls (comparable to Dunhill group 3–4), where the Latakia may develop its full resonance. Though not the most approachable entry point for novices, it proves a steadfast everyday companion for the seasoned enthusiast, and an excellent comparative blend for those wishing to explore the interplay between Latakia prominence and Virginia-Orient balance. 9. Conclusion: Gregory L. Pease’s Westminster stands as a worthy heir to the classical English tradition rooted in the London of the twentieth century - firm, lucid, well-balanced, and unbending in its refusal to court fashionable sweetness. The modified Cavendish method lends the Latakia a softened contour and binds the components into a coherent whole. For the smoker who values craftsmanship, sobriety, and lineage, GLP Westminster is a reliable and distinguished companion - not the exact resurrection of the legendary Dunhill London Mixture, but close enough in spirit and bearing to ease the sense of its absence.

Wer Westminster kauft, erwartet einen klassischen Engländer. Der Duft aus der geöffneten Dose scheint dies zunächst zu bestätigen, und ich dachte: Schade, nichts Neues, trotz des hochgelobten Herstellers. Was GL.
