Balmoral Puro Dominicana

You can really go into detail about this cigar brand—and today we’ll do just that—pardon, you’ll have to bear with us! These cigars have been sold in Germany since the turn of the millennium; initially, the various lines were marketed under the suffix “Royal Selection” and did not aim for any particular image or premium positioning. That only changed when the long-standing owner family Wintermans from the Netherlands decided in 2013 to launch the Balmoral Anejo XO brand family as their “Signature Cigars.” Presentation, tobacco quality, craftsmanship, and of course the flavor led these cigars to great success, and they are now available in numerous lines. In the early 2020s, the Wintermans family unfortunately withdrew from the tobacco business and sold their company AGIO Cigars to the Danish tobacco giant STG. This deal naturally also included the Meharis cigarillos, Biddies, and Panter.

Balmoral Anejo XO Cigars: The Success Story of the Signature Cigars

The Danes are known for streamlining acquired brand portfolios quite drastically. However, in the case of Balmoral, this has remained very manageable, and numerous new lines have even been added. Alongside the exclusive and prestigious Balmoral Anejo XO cigars, these include the very affordable San Pedro de Macoris cigars as well as the Balmoral Puro cigars in their second version presented here. The Puro from Nicaragua was introduced in 2022, while the ones presented here from the Dominican Republic followed in summer 2024. As the name suggests, they are Dominican puros, meaning the filler, the binder, and the wrapper all come from the island of Hispaniola.

Balmoral is also known as the estate of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. She spent around twelve weeks there every summer at the castle located in Scotland on the River Dee. She passed away there on September 8, 2022. Interestingly, the castle is not part of the royal holdings (Crown Estate) but is privately owned by the British royal family. To our knowledge, Elizabeth II was not known as an avid cigar aficionada, so it remains unclear why this name was chosen for the cigars at the time. Incidentally, the pronunciation places the emphasis on BalMOral (more like BalMOrell) rather than BALmoral, as most people in Germany tend to say.
