Balmoral: A Historical Legacy from the Netherlands
Balmoral doesn’t refer to a castle in this case. While it is the name of the Scottish summer residence of the British monarchy, Balmoral is also the name of a cigar brand—an exceptionally interesting one at that. Naturally, a name like this carries an obligation for a certain style, which Balmoral cigars certainly deliver, alongside a great deal of tradition. Founded in 1895, the Dutch company started its journey during a time when Holland, thanks to its seafaring trade, was a major hub of the European tobacco industry.
High-Quality Short Fillers from Balmoral Cigars
Quality and variety are the two attributes that have earned Balmoral recognition throughout its more than 100-year history. The Dominican Selection series illustrates why: Positioned in the lower price segment, these short fillers offer aficionados excellent value for money.
The blend of carefully selected Caribbean tobaccos, combined with an Ecuadorian wrapper, meets even the demanding expectations placed on a handmade cigar.
Balmoral – Indulgence in Royal Variety
Balmoral offers a variety of cigars to suit every taste. The Royal Selection series impresses with cigars expertly blended from Dominican Olor, Dominican Piloto, and Brazilian Mata Fina. Depending on preference, you can choose the milder Ecuador Shade Grown wrapper with the Royal Selection Claro, or the Royal Selection Maduro, featuring a dark Arapiraca wrapper from Brazil that provides a slightly sweet taste, typical of Brazil. The "royal family" of Balmoral is rounded off by the Royal Selection Reserva, with a rich Sun Grown wrapper from Nicaragua, perfect for those who prefer a bolder flavor.
Balmoral: From Insider Tip to Premium Brand
More recently, Balmoral has entered the premium long filler segment. A few years ago, the brand introduced the Anejo 18, featuring an exceptional 18-year-old wrapper. This venture into uncharted territory was a resounding success. When the supply of 18-year-old wrappers was exhausted, Balmoral continued the series with the Anejo XO, making only slight modifications beyond the wrapper. Since then, Balmoral has expanded its popular premium cigar offerings with the highly complex Anejo XO Oscuro, the creamier Anejo XO Connecticut, and the Anejo XO Nicaragua, which combines a pronounced variety of flavors with a velvety sweetness.
With the Puro Nicaragua, Balmoral has fully embraced the Central American country, crafting a cigar with tobaccos from all four of Nicaragua's growing regions: wrapper and binder from Jalapa, and filler from Ometepe, Esteli, and Condega. As expected, the result is bold and robust. This first Balmoral series not produced in the Dominican Republic is expressly recommended for experienced aficionados!
Balmoral's foray into the world of premium cigars has been more than successful. While there were initial doubts due to the brand's lack of experience in this category, those concerns have long been laid to rest. Today, Balmoral is one of the few brands offering a comprehensive portfolio, from machine-made cigarillos to premium vitolas—always in excellent quality!
