The Makers Behind La Flor Dominicana Cigars
Behind the brand La Flor Dominicana lies a broad portfolio of various series and blends covering the full spectrum from mild enjoyment to an intense smoking experience with a spicy, medium-bodied to full-bodied character, yet remaining smooth on the palate. The Tabacalera is a small factory with only a few employees. A concept focused on quality rather than quantity was the top priority. Consistent implementation and creative innovation have allowed the company to grow over the years, transforming the small factory into a large one, with cigars from La Flor Dominicana now well known internationally and successfully positioned in the market.
Responsible for this success are Litto and Ines Gomez, who founded the La Flor Dominicana manufactory in 1996, based in Tamboril in the Dominican Republic. From the very beginning, the quality of their cigars was their highest priority. Just one year after founding the company, they decided to purchase their own farm in La Canela to produce the tobaccos required for their cigars themselves. As a result, a large portion of all tobaccos comes from their own plantations. In addition, premium tobaccos are sourced from various growing regions around the world. This forms the foundation on which premium cigars are created through different blends.
Have You Ever Smoked a Chisel? The Chisel by La Flor Dominicana
Cigars are available in an almost immeasurable variety of shapes (vitolas). It seems almost unimaginable that someone could still invent something new, yet that is exactly what Litto Gomez achieved. He invented the Chisel, a cigar with a wedge-shaped head resembling a chisel, and even had this shape patented. The “El Jocko” also sprang from his inventive mind. The El Jocko is fuller in the middle and tapers to a slightly slimmer foot, while the head is thin and rounded, creating an overall conical shape. The small Carajos is also popular. In addition, he naturally offers longfillers in Maduro or in Tubo. With his Tabacalera, Litto is a smaller manufacturer competing in a league with Perdomo, Cumpay, Fuente, or Balmoral. Due to smaller production volumes, he can create specialties that larger manufacturers such as Davidoff, Santa Damiana, or Vegafina may not focus on. That makes his products particularly exciting.
A Career Path Like Something Out of a Novel
The life of Litto Gomez could serve as the basis for a book or as an example of the American dream—from dishwasher to millionaire. His father was Portuguese, Litto was born in Galicia, Spain, and spent his childhood in Uruguay before emigrating to Canada with his brother. There, he worked as a restaurant assistant in Toronto, which led to his first encounter with a cigar in 1975. He recounts that one evening, with the restaurant fully booked, he had to step in as a waiter, which made him nervous because his English was still quite limited. Everything went well, however, and after the last guest had left satisfied, they celebrated. At the end of the evening, the bartender gave him a cigar, a Montecristo No. 2. Litto enjoyed smoking this first cigar on his way home through the snow. At that moment, he could hardly have imagined the impact cigars would have on his life.
After five years, the brothers left Canada and settled in Florida, where they initially traded in spirits and later ran a pawn shop. This marked the next turning point in Litto’s professional career. Working with gold and jewelry led him to develop expertise in the field, and together with his wife Ines, he eventually ran a successful jewelry store in North Miami Beach. During a robbery, Litto Gomez was left tied up while the thieves escaped with $400,000 in loot. This led Litto and Ines to give up their business and embark on a new path. Litto says he wanted to launch his own cigar line, produced in-house. With this idea, the success story of the La Flor Dominicana brand began.
Exquisite Boutique Cigars
As mentioned at the beginning, the portfolio of La Flor Dominicana is highly diverse. Since these are boutique cigars, meaning specialties produced in small batches, it is not unusual for not all of them to be available at all times.
To get to know the individual vitolas, it is worth taking a few quiet minutes to browse through the different series. For orientation: the complex yet harmonious 1994 refers to the year Litto Gomez took his first steps in the cigar industry. The Ligero and Double Ligero lines are the strongest in the portfolio, as they contain a high proportion of Ligero tobacco in the filler. The Edition Limitada brings together numerous vitolas released in strictly limited quantities.
The Next Generation
Continued success is to be expected given the quality of the blends. This also applies on a personal level: Tony Gomez, the son of Litto and Ines, has already created his own cigar blends and appears ready to carry the company forward one day.
