Vegas de Santiago Secretos del Maestro Don Luis
The Tabacalera Vegas de Santiago is located in Santiago de Puriscal, a small town in Costa Rica situated in a climatically pleasant zone between the capital San José and the Pacific. With around 35,000 inhabitants, it is the center of the small but fine cigar production in the so-called "Switzerland" of Central America. Tobacco has been cultivated and cigars rolled here for about 100 years.
The central character in the history of this Tabacalera is Don Luis Santana Lamas, who, after about 30 years of highly successful work for the H. Upmann factory in Cuba, sought a new challenge. After his active time in Cuba, he emigrated to Costa Rica as a retiree but couldn't stay away from cigars even there. His curiosity led him to cooperate with local tobacco farmers and contribute his expertise and technical knowledge regarding the cultivation, drying, aging, and storage of raw tobacco. Naturally, he also perfected the craftsmanship of the fine cigars produced by this Tabacalera. This led to a 10-year collaboration with Tabacalera Vegas de Santiago. The "Maestro" or "Master" Don Luis passed away in 2006, and in his honor, this blend was created. It is considered the flagship of the factory.
The tobaccos for this cigar line mature for at least three years before being processed. The wrapper is a Connecticut from Ecuador, the binder is an H-2000 from the same country. The filler blend comes from Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The characteristic of this blend is a gentle creaminess that appeals to both beginners and experienced cigar enthusiasts. They are mild cigars that can be enjoyed without complications.
