The Gold Cut - Problems in Cigar Production

The term "Gold Cut" refers to a defect in machine-made cigar production and not, as the name might suggest, a special quality of the cigar.
The manufacturing defect is caused by secondary air, which prevents the wrapper from fully covering the binder as it dries. This results in an overlap issue where the binder is exposed, causing an uneven burn and significant draw problems. Cigars with this Gold Cut defect are typically sorted out and classified as rejects.
Gold Cut by Stephan Niderehe
In 1817, Stephan Niderehe founded the first tobacco factory in Marburg-Weidenhausen. In 1875, production was moved to the Schwanenhof, which still stands today. Tobacco production and processing continued there until 1956. Since then, the premises have been rented out by his descendants as office and commercial spaces.
To this day, "antique Niderehe Tobacco Gold Cut Oriental Tobacco" can still be found in original packaging from the 1930s and 1940s on auction platforms online.
