Calibrate Your Hygrometer Correctly – Set Up Your Cigar Humidor

Before using your humidor, you should check if it is properly set up. Proper calibration depends on the type of humidor: there is a distinction between analog and digital hygrometers.

Analog Hygrometers

Hygrometer
Let's start with the analog Adorini hygrometer, which is standard in most humidors. There are three types:

  1. Analog hygrometers with metal springs are the simplest and most affordable type, though they often lack accuracy.
  2. Analog hygrometers with natural hair provide slightly more accurate readings but need regular checks and adjustments.
  3. Analog hygrometers with synthetic hair are the most reliable and offer the highest accuracy. All humidors in the Deluxe series are equipped with this system and are pre-calibrated before shipping. However, occasional readjustment may be required during transport.

    Hygrometer

With the first two models, no hygrometer remains accurate long-term without regular calibration. A six-month interval is reasonable for recalibration. All analog hygrometers have a screw on the back for calibration purposes.

Calibration of Analog Hygrometers

Cloth Method

  1. Place the hygrometer in a damp cloth for about an hour.
  2. Ideally, wrap both the hygrometer and the damp cloth in a plastic bag to ensure consistent humidity.
  3. Quickly adjust the hygrometer to 98% relative humidity. Make sure there is no draft, and the temperature remains as constant as possible.

Salt Method

There are several ways to conduct the salt method. We recommend the following method for a straightforward calibration of your hygrometer:

  1. Prepare a shot glass.
  2. Add a tablespoon of salt.
  3. Add a few drops of water.
  4. Stir the salt and water together.
  5. Place the shot glass in a sealable plastic box or bag. Position the hygrometer next to it and seal the box or bag airtight.
  6. After about 8 hours, a humidity level of approximately 75% should be reached. Adjust the needle accordingly.

Tip: The advantage of a plastic bag is that you can calibrate with a screwdriver through the bag without removing the hygrometer, avoiding fluctuations in humidity.

Boveda Humidipak Vorstellung

Boveda Humidipak Vorstellung

Calibration of Digital Hygrometers

Digital hygrometers generally do not require calibration. However, they need some time in the humidor to display the correct humidity level.

Checking the Calibration

For both digital and analog hygrometers, note that temperature fluctuations can cause deviations of up to 3%. The best test remains pressing the burning end of the cigar to check its consistency.
