Aficionado – The Cigar Enthusiast
Many people certainly appreciate a good cigar – but for some, a cigar is much more than just a pleasant smoke. These true, passionate admirers of cigars are called, with the Spanish word for "lover," Aficionados.
When the Spanish conquistadors were the first to colonize the American continent, they were naturally also the first Europeans to come into contact with tobacco, and so it was the Spanish who introduced tobacco plants to Europe and traded them. Spain was also the first country to manufacture cigars. It is therefore not surprising that the Spanish language still dominates the cigar vocabulary today. Moreover, most of the key tobacco-growing regions are still located in Spanish-speaking Central and South America: in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Nicaragua , or Honduras. Incidentally, aficionados are not only found in the world of cigars. Enthusiasts of bullfighting or Argentine tango are often referred to as aficionados as well.
Style, Respect, and a Love for Enjoyment
What exactly defines an aficionado? What sets them apart from a smoker who enjoys a good cigar after work without giving it much thought?
An aficionado's sense of identity is primarily about mindful enjoyment. They know exactly why they choose a particular cigar, and they celebrate the act of selecting, lighting, and smoking it. Smoking is not just about satisfying a personal craving; it involves forming an emotional bond with their favorite cigars and ensuring they receive the best care.
Of course, being an aficionado is first and foremost a matter of style. A true cigar lover pays attention to how and where they enjoy their cigar, providing it with a proper "home" in a stylish humidor and developing personal rituals for inspecting, cutting, and finally lighting it. Naturally, only high-quality cigars are considered. There are no limits to taste: A classic like the Montecristo No. 1 is as intriguing to an aficionado as a cigar from the exclusive Padron Family Reserve line by Padron, or even a more modern cigar like the Rocky Patel Freedom may be the object of their desire. Style is not necessarily a matter of price, but above all of quality and awareness.
Another important aspect that characterizes the aficionado is respect for the product. They are well-versed in the origins of cigars, know who is behind their favorite brands, and often have preferred growing regions. An aficionado is familiar with different wrappers, production processes, and knows exactly how to best store and preserve their little treasures. For an aficionado, a cigar is always a small piece of cultural heritage.
Above all, however, stands the love for enjoyment. Every ritual is an expression of the anticipation of what awaits the connoisseur: a fantastic cigar with unique aromas, whose enjoyment is worth every bit of attention, every minute, and indeed every second of dedication.
The Rituals of an Aficionado
Those who count themselves among the true lovers of cigars naturally have their own personal rituals and methods for preparing themselves and their cigar for the upcoming smoke. First and foremost, the cigar must be properly stored in a stylish humidor. Aficionados with large collections prefer humidor cabinets like the Adorini Roma , or other extravagant solutions like the Adorini Pyramid Deluxe L Black (1603) . Imagination and personal style know no bounds here.
When it comes to preparation and lighting, a high-quality cutter is, of course, indispensable, whether it’s a classic cutter or a cigar scissors. For the lighting process, an aficionado often uses cedar wood spills. Not only are they stylish accessories, but their pleasant aroma also adds to the room’s fragrance and creates a completely harmonious atmosphere. All of this requires time and leisure: It is almost a given to also enjoy a fine cognac, single malt, or smooth rum. Something luxurious alongside the precious cigar completes the experience and makes the stylish smoke perfect for the aficionado.
