Guillermo Rico: Cigars in Family Hands

The cigars of the Gran Honduras brand are sold under the name "Guillermo Rico." They are named after the tobacco company in Danlí, Honduras, where they are produced. Behind this boutique label stands, unsurprisingly, a man named Guillermo Rico. Guillermo is not solely responsible for the success of the cigars. His family, now in its fourth generation in the tobacco industry, also plays a crucial role. The Ricos' Colombian ancestors already cultivated tobacco and rolled cigars.

From Trader to Producer

Guillermo Rico began his career as a trader, supplying raw tobaccos to the United States. When exports flourished, he decided to produce cigars himself. He focuses on quality over quantity. Everything is done in-house, from growing the plants to fermentation to rolling the cigars. Even the boxes are lacquered in the Honduran factory.

Confusion About Names: Gran Honduras or Guillermo Rico?

In American tobacco shops, you are unlikely to find cigars under the brand names "Gran Honduras" or "Guillermo Rico." Often, cigar brands are marketed in connection with Cuba since Cuban originals do not enjoy trademark protection in the USA. The cigars discussed here follow this trend and bear a name reminiscent of the capital of Cuba: Gran H....o.

Producer and Namesake: Guillermo Rico

Due to stricter legal regulations in Europe, we are legally prohibited from advertising with geographical indications if the product does not originate from the corresponding region. Simply put: if it says Cuba, it must also come from Cuba.

To avoid further misunderstandings, we decided to name the cigars after their creator – Guillermo Rico. The name "Gran Honduras," which should actually be harmless in Europe, was too close to the controversial US original for us. We ask for your understanding. :-)

The Cigar Range of Guillermo Rico

The portfolio of Guillermo Rico includes numerous series and cigars, which can sometimes be confusing. Here is a brief overview:

Connecticut No. 1

The Guillermo Rico Connecticut No. 1 cigars impress with their bright, silky wrapper and mild, creamy taste. They are ideal for beginners and anyone who appreciates a gentle smoking experience.

Criollo No. 3

Fans of medium-bodied and aromatic cigars will find the Guillermo Rico Criollo No. 3. These cigars are known for their balanced blend and spicy-sweet taste.

Corojo No. 5

The "classic" Guillermo Rico Corojo No. 5 convinces with its strong and aromatic profile. The wrapper and binder come from Nicaragua, and the filler consists of a distinctive blend.

Corojo No. 5 Maduro

Even more intense is the Guillermo Rico Corojo No. 5 Maduro. These dark Maduro cigars no longer have anything in common with the original series (Corojo No. 5) and offer a significantly more intense taste experience. Not suitable for beginners!

All cigars of the Gran Reserva No. 5 2012 series are made with limited, specially aged tobaccos. They offer an exceptional flavor richness with deep, earthy notes and an elegant, spicy sweetness.

Black Dahlia

The Guillermo Rico Black Dahlia stands out with its full-bodied and complex flavor profile. With a dark, oily wrapper and a perfectly balanced blend of tobaccos, it offers a rich and intense smoking experience.

Subtle notes of nut and caramel await aficionados with the Guillermo Rico Blue in Green. With its gentle and creamy smoke development, these cigars are perfect for connoisseurs who prefer a milder cigar.

The Guillermo Rico La Conquista series complements the range. These aromatic cigars are offered in four interesting formats. In our opinion, the La Conquista are the most balanced cigars in the Honduran manufacturer's range.
